2012 takes me into theseventh year at Beach Braces. I am so very proud of my talented team and sothankful for the South Bay parents and families with whom we interact daily.

2011 was a year of change...for the better. It started with the addition of two new registered dentalassistants - Mary and Gloria. Last week, we celebrated their one yearanniversaries as part of the team. Way to go girls! Last year wehosted three Beach Braces Breaks at Yogurtland for patients and theirfamilies. We marked the beginning of summer, back-to-school week, andpost-Thanksgiving time with custom, creamy concoctions covered withconfectionaries. Yum, yum, yum! In September, we updated our exam room with anew, comfy "marshmallow" chair and patient education videos forinitial consultations.

2011 was our first year toparticipate in "Operation Gratitude" with a donation of toothbrushes,toothpaste and 300+ pounds of Halloween candy from our patients and thecommunity. We commend this organization for sending care packages to the troopsoverseas and hope to provide them donations annually.

As we kick off 2012,I want to update you on what’s new at Beach Braces. Over the past few years, Ihave had success with a new aesthetic, lingual bracket system called, “MTM NoTrace.” MTM stands for Minor Tooth Movement. The brackets are placed behind thefront 6-8 teeth making them untraceable and relatively comfortable. Patientslove the fact that this treatment is truly invisible. Additionally, treatmenttime is minimal, with many cases being completed in as little as 16-24 weeks. Ihave treated over one hundred arches with this appliance, making Beach Bracesthe leading provider of the MTM No Trace system in the greater Los Angeles area(south of San Luis Obispo to north of San Diego)!

Let's just say Reid Inskeep is a big fan of Beach Braces and Beach Braces is a big fan of Reid Inskeep. He's an awesome skater and he sent us this rad video of himself skating at Woodward West, Tehachapi, CA. and we wanted to share it with our blog readers and Facebook friends.

Reid is outfitted with a GoPro, a mouthful of metal from Beach Braces in Manhattan Beach CA, and his tie-dyed Beach Braces t-shirt. Watch him ride around Woodward West's skate parks.

Reid was in phase 1 orthodontic treatment for about 12 months. All our patients get an awesome tie dyed t-shirt when they start treatment but only one rides Woodward West like Reid Inskeep. Watch out for him busting some moves and catching big air in the near future! Go Reid!!

The Beach Braces Team visits schools each year to inform children on the importance of good oral hygiene. We discuss eating healthy snacks, proper brushing techniques and the importance of mouthguard use during contact sports. Our presentations are informative and interactive. The children love it!

DID YOU KNOW? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child have their first orthodontic examination by age seven. Early interceptive treatment can work with a child’s growth to correct upper or lower jaws that are growing too much or not enough, as well as crowded, crooked or “spaced-out” teeth. Early treatment can eliminate the need for extraction of permanent teeth and surgical procedures later in life. Self-esteem is improved when children feel good about themselves!

We provide the children with a bag of goodies to take home which contains the following items: A travel toothbrush and toothpaste for school.

It has been a busy summer at Beach Braces. With school out and our patients enjoying the break, we took advantage of their spare time and held events at Yogurtland in El Segundo, not once, but TWICE!

In June, we held our 5th Annual Patient Appreciation Party at the Rosecrans Avenue location. Patients and their families had a field day, enjoying self-serve yogurt, customized to one's desires. We were delighted to see the large number that turned out for the affair, and everyone left full. Only a few daring patients with braces snuck gummy bears past Dr. Panucci.

The experience was so good that we decided to repeat it in August. But, this time, we celebrated a special Birthday: the 6th year for Beach Braces! Patients, friends and families packed the joint on a sunny South Bay Thursday afternoon. It was another sweet delight, and our way of saying, "Thank you," to the people, big and small, who have supported us over the years.

Creating smiles is what we love to do. But events like our Yogurtland socials truly put smiles on the faces of the entire Beach Braces team. Thank you for placing your confidence in us. We are proud to be a part of the Manhattan Beach community, and look forward to our next 6 years!

Protect Your Teeth from Decalcification While Wearing Braces

I am using Opal Seal to prevent decalcification (white scars) of the teeth in my braces patients in Manhattan Beach. It is a fluoride infused sealant that is placed under the bracket over the entire tooth and gives protection for 9-12 months

As you may know, orthodontic patients are subject to greater amounts of decalcification due to the increased difficulty of cleaning around the braces. This always been a great frustration for us, even though we do our absolute best to encourage proper oral hygiene during treatment. The steps we have taken during the past are to encourage patients to return to your office every three months for professional teeth cleaning. We also provide our patients with oral hygiene tools and review proper hygiene instructions. Even with all of this, we still have patients who experience decalcification.

In an effort to continue to minimize decalcification during orthodontic treatment, Beach Braces have started using a new bonding priming agent that protects the teeth by providing a thin layer sealant on the entire facial surface of the teeth. The sealant-primer, Opal Seal, is a product from Opal Orthodontics that releases fluoride and recharges fluoride uptake, a first in the orthodontic industry. Additionally, Opal Seal is detectable under a UV black light to facilitate removal and reapplication.

FACTORS CAUSING MOVEMENT

The 6-month retention phase allows for a majority of growth and settling to occur so that the teeth and jaws are as stable as possible. However, living tissue is always subject to change from posture, habits, muscle pressure, etc. The eruption of teeth, dental restorations and the aging process all contribute to unwanted tooth movement. Forces exerted by the lips and tongue can also cause subtle changes in tooth positions. Habits such as biting your nails or chewing on pencils put enough pressure on the teeth to move them as well.

Recent studies have indicated that growth occurs in small amounts throughout life. Thus, teeth and jaws can shift at any time in varying degrees, which usually depend on the original malocclusion, the facial muscle structure and the amount of residual growth.

Some believe that un-erupted wisdom teeth are a factor in movement of teeth, but this has not been proven conclusively and tooth shifting has been seen to occur in people with no wisdom teeth. Removal of wisdom teeth or 3^rd molars may be recommended due to lack of adequate space in the mouth for normal eruption.

LIFETIME RETENTION

The only way to maintain the tooth alignment indefinitely is with permanent guidance or lifetime retention. This means wearing a removable retainer 4-7 nights per week forever. Removable retainers must be used in both the upper and lower jaws.

Teeth Whitening for a Brighter, Whiter Smile

Your smile is one of the first things most people notice about you. Unfortunately, as we age, teeth can become stained or grow darker and present a less than brilliant picture to the world.

There are many reasons why your teeth may not be the bright white you'd like them to be. Some medications can cause discoloration in your teeth. Coffee, tea and certain foods can stain your teeth, and smoking will also cause yellowing of teeth, as well as having other more serious side effects to your health. Also, as you age, the outer layer of your tooth enamel is worn away, revealing the darker tissue underneath.

The first step in your search for a brilliant smile is to discover what's caused your teeth to become discolored. Your dentist can determine the cause of discoloration, whether teeth whitening can help, and which kind of whitening procedures will be most effective.

Not all whiteners work the same way, and not all whitening products will help your smile. For instance, in general, yellowish teeth bleach well, while brown or gray toned teeth usually do not. Also, tooth whitening products will not affect bondings or fillings, so porcelain veneers or bondings, so that all your teeth will be the same color, might be best for you. Once you've discovered the cause of your tooth discoloration, there are several options available, from over-the-counter products to the latest in dental applications using lasers.

All toothpastes help remove surface stains, and some whitening toothpastes contain polishing or chemical agents that provide additional stain removal. But teeth whitening toothpastes only remove surface stains. Whitening toothpastes can lighten your teeth by about one shade, while your dentist can help you go three to eight shades lighter with professional teeth whitening products.

Similarly, over-the-counter whitening strips and gels cannot achieve the degree of whiteness that your dentist's products can. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide isn't as high in over-the-counter products. Worse, many kits have acetic or citric acid as the lightening agent, which can cause damage to your tooth enamel if overused or used improperly.

The safest, easiest and most sure way to whiten your teeth is to have your dentist prescribe the best method for you, whether it's in-office bleaching, at-home bleaching, or teeth whitening toothpastes. Most in-office or at-home professional methods use either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as a bleaching agent. Impressions are taken of your teeth, from which custom trays are fabricated. You place whitening gel into the tray and 'wear' the tray on your teeth. The length of time can vary greatly, depending on the condition of your teeth and your body's response to the bleaching agent.

Most people are satisfied with the sparkle they get from brushing twice a day, or if you cover your mouth when you smile or talk because you're embarrassed about discolored teeth, talk to your dentist today about teeth whitening. You could be smiling through brighter, whiter teeth tomorrow.

Instructions
1. Remove the tray (made of an internal and external piece) from the package and align it correctly over your teeth.

Mouth Protection During Sports

Dental injuries are the most common type of injuries to the face, and 60% of facial injuries occur during sports practice. An athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer damage to the teeth when not wearing a mouth guard.

A mouth guard is a flexible piece of plastic that fits around the upper teeth and protects them from injury. In addition to protecting against direct damage to the teeth, by cushioning the lips and cheeks from the teeth or orthodontic appliances, a mouth guard helps prevent laceration and bruising. A mouth guard can also prevent serious injuries caused when the lower jaw is jammed into the upper jaw, including concussion, cerebral hemorrhage, jaw fractures and neck injuries.

There are several types of mouth guards. When choosing one, remember that a mouth guard should be flexible, comfortable, durable, odorless, tasteless, and easy to clean. A mouth guard should fit properly so that it protects your mouth, but does not interfere with breathing or speaking.

The least expensive mouth guard is a stock one sold in sporting goods stores. They come in small, medium, and large and are held in place by biting down. The disadvantage of these mouth guards is that the fit is not adjustable and may not protect your teeth as well as a more fitted model would. Holding these guards in place requires that you bite down, so they can interfere with speech and breathing.

The most commonly used type of mouth guard is also sold in sporting goods stores. They're called "boil and bite mouth guards," because they're softened in boiling water and then formed to fit your mouth. This type of mouth guard costs a little more than the stock types, but because it is formed around your teeth, it fits and protects your mouth better. However, it still may not cover all your teeth properly.

The best mouth guard for preventing injury is one that is custom made for you by your dentist. This type is a bit more expensive, but it is the most effective at protecting your mouth, face and head. Because it is custom fit to your teeth, it's also the most comfortable to wear. When you consider that the cost of fixing one broken tooth is more expensive than having a mouth guard custom made, the value is obvious.

Whatever type of mouth guard you choose, you should wear it for any activity in which there is a chance of contact with other participants or hard surfaces. Mouth guards aren't just for football and hockey. If you or your child rides a bicycle, participates in gymnastics, volleyball, skateboarding, or any sport or activity in which a facial or dental injury might occur, a mouth guard is a necessity. Half of all dental injuries can be prevented, and a mouth guard is an important aid in protecting your teeth, face and mouth.

Orthodontic Treatment for Children

For children who need orthodontic treatment, there is a best time to begin treatment in order to achieve the best results. For this reason, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be examined by an orthodontist by age seven, or earlier if there are indications of a problem.

Why age seven? By age seven, most children have a mix of primary (baby) teeth and permanent teeth, and your orthodontist will be able to spot even subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth. Whether your child has an inherited predisposition to a "bad bite," such as crowded teeth or unequal jaw growth, or an acquired orthodontic problem, such as from thumb sucking or an accident, the advantage of early diagnosis and treatment is that some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they are found and treated early, during the years that the treatment may work in conjunction with your child's natural growth spurts. Waiting until your child's permanent teeth have come in or until her/his facial growth is nearly complete may make correction of some problems more difficult.

If an orthodontist recommends that your child needs treatment now, then s/he should be able to answer these questions for you:

If we begin treatment now, will we avoid extracting permanent teeth?
Will beginning now simplify the treatment that will be needed later?
Will my child have to wear braces, and if yes, will treatment now reduce the time in braces later?
Will beginning now influence the growth of my child's jaws in a positive manner?
Will treating now eliminate a problem that could do damage if it's not treated?

If the answer is yes to most of these questions, there are the three types of treatment that your orthodontist may recommend…

Preventive - Intended to keep a bad bite or crooked teeth from developing in an otherwise normal mouth and to provide adequate space for permanent teeth to come in.
Interceptive - For problems that, left untreated, could lead to the development of more serious dental problems over time. This could include correction of thumb- and finger-sucking habits, tooth removal or resizing to guide permanent teeth into correct positions, or using a space maintainer to hold space for permanent teeth.
Comprehensive - Involves problems with the alignment of your child's teeth, how his/her jaws function and how her/his top and bottom teeth fit together. The goal is to correct the identified problem and restore your child's bite to its optimum condition.

A check-up may reveal that your child's bite is fine and that he or she doesn't require treatment. In many cases, your orthodontist may simply want to watch your child and his/her orthodontic condition, doing periodic examinations to "keep an eye" on development. Any of these diagnoses ultimately will give you the peace of mind of knowing that you're doing the best for your child.

Your Child's First Orthodontic Check-up: No Later than Age 7

When most people think of orthodontics, they think of teenagers. And the fact is, most orthodontic treatment begins between the ages of 9 and 14. However, by age 7, most children have a mix of adult and baby teeth. Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth while emerging baby teeth are still present. That's important because some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they're found early. For these reasons, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. While your child's teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect. Of course, the check-up may reveal that your child's bite is fine, and that can be comforting news. Even if a problem is detected, your orthodontist might not recommend immediate treatment. Chances are, your doctor will take a "observation" approach, checking on your child from time to time as the permanent teeth come in and the jaws and face continue to grow. For each patient who needs treatment, there's an ideal time for treatment to begin in order to achieve the best results. The orthodontist is the specialist who has the knowledge to determine when the time is just right.

In some cases, the orthodontist might find a problem that can benefit from early treatment. Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing, and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. Typically, early treatment involves the use of orthodontic appliances, which may be removable, to guide the growth of young bones and create a better environment for adult teeth as they emerge. In some cases, the orthodontist will be able to achieve results that wouldn't be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing. Early treatment gives the orthodontist the chance to: 1. guide jaw growth, 2. lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, 3. correct harmful oral habits (i.e. thumb sucking), 4. improve appearance and self-esteem, 5. guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position, 5. improve the way lips meet.

Dental Hygiene - Plaque and Tartar Control

One of the main causes of tooth decay, plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that adheres to teeth, gum tissues, orthodontic dental appliances, and even your tongue. Plaque forms from the bacteria that naturally live in your mouth, and it uses carbohydrates in the food you eat to produce acid, which can attack your dental enamel and eat a hole in your tooth. This hole is called a cavity.

Plaque is so sticky that it can't be rinsed off. It must be brushed off, and it forms again soon after you remove it. Some studies report that plaque begins reforming as quickly as five minutes after you brush! Other studies report that it can take up to four hours to begin reforming. Regardless of how long it takes, plaque does start to reform, and that that's why your dentist wants you to brush at least twice a day, but preferably after every meal.

In spite of the best oral hygiene, plaque can become calculus, commonly called tartar. Tartar is a hard substance that forms from a combination of minerals in the saliva and dead plaque bacterial cells. This deposit grows and mineralizes, sort of like a coral reef, in the nooks and crannies between teeth and just under your gums. Tartar can irritate your gums, causing them to pull away and leave a pocket where bacteria can congregate and eventually cause gum disease.

The good news is that you can control plaque. Frequent brushing and flossing removes the plaque that can cause so many problems if left untreated. Tartar, however, can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning with special instruments. But, in a way, you can control tartar build-up…by brushing with tartar control toothpaste. The tartar control ingredients in toothpaste cannot remove tartar that's already formed, but they can help prevent it. The more plaque you remove from your teeth, the fewer building blocks tartar will have to grow. There's even research that suggests that chewing a sugarless gum with xylitol may help prevent the build-up of bacteria that leads to plaque and tartar.

Another way to slow plaque is to eat a healthy, balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks. Sugary foods like candy and starchy foods like bread cause acids to form in greater amounts than healthy foods like carrots and nuts. If you snack often and don't brush after, you're subjecting your teeth to acid plaque attacks all day long.

You should also see your dentist and hygienist twice a year for checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can look for problem spots that you may be missing in your oral hygiene, and your hygienist will remove any tartar build-up before it has a chance to cause a problem.

With a lifetime habit of brushing, flossing, fluoride supplements and dental visits, tooth decay and gum disease will become almost non-existent. That means you'll be smiling with your natural teeth for the rest of your life!

Phase 2 Orthodontist Treatment

While not every phase is required for every patient, there are typically three phases of an orthodontic treatment plan...

Phase 1 Early Interceptive Treatment - The goal is to save space in the dental arches for permanent teeth and to help the upper and lower jaws relate to each other properly. This phase is predominantly for children aged seven to twelve with most of their baby teeth and perhaps a few permanent front incisors.
Phase 2 - Basically, Phase 2 treatment involves using braces to straighten teeth.
Final Phase - Retention - Despite the intensity and length of orthodontic treatment, the teeth tend to return to pretreatment positions. Wearing a retainer assures that your new straight, healthy bite will stay that way.

Phase 2 is usually the braces stage of treatment and involves straightening the permanent teeth and perfecting the occlusion (bite). For those adolescents or adults who did not have early interceptive treatment, Phase 2 treatment may involve tooth extractions or jaw surgery to correct occlusion (bite) problems that braces alone cannot correct

This second alignment stage of treatment begins for a child when most or all of the permanent teeth have erupted into the mouth or for an adolescent/adult when all necessary major skeletal and space corrections have been made. Braces are placed on the permanent teeth and gentle, directed pressure moves the teeth into alignment. The bone and tissue in front of the tooth slowly gives way, the tooth shifts and the bone and tissue behind fill in the space. Every few weeks, the braces are adjusted to redirect the pressure. Over a period of months, a new smile develops!

All patients are unique, with unique personalities and individualized response to braces, but in general, braces take approximately one to three years to straighten the teeth. A few of the factors that determine length of Phase 2 treatment are growth of the face and mouth, co-operation of the patient in following instructions and the severity of the original orthodontic problem.

Don't be concerned if you or your child did not have the benefit of early interceptive treatment during the growing years. Many people don't begin treatment until their adult years. In fact, more and more adults are choosing to get braces every year. As an adult or adolescent, your treatment plan may involve some adjustments before braces can be put on, but so long as teeth and gums are healthy, a bite can be improved and a smile straightened at any age.

2010 The year was capped off with our third holiday Toy Drive--what a success! We are so grateful to all of you who so generously contributed. We collected three overflowing bins of toys for the Beach Cities Annual Toy Drive which helps the charitable organizations bring a smile to children during the holiday season.

2011 will see us continue to strive for yet more improvements in the patient experience, not just in first-rate orthodontic care, but in the overall Beach Braces process…because everyone should love to smile. Plans call for many more school presentations, and I’ve got a bevy of ideas for my annual patient appreciation party. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you from our entire team. Firstly, what exactly is orthodontics? Orthodontics is definitely the highly-specialized area of dental treatment focused on the straightening of teeth (malocclusions) to improve functional or cosmetic difficulties. Employing specifically created and built in machines, (lingual braces, retainers or clear aligners) regular and soft pressure is put on one's teeth causing them to move into the ideal placement.

A lot of orthodontic troubles could possibly be simpler to correct if treated early. Waiting right up until all the permanent teeth have come in, or until eventually facial improvement is virtually finish, could make correction of some issues more troublesome. But children and adults can both gain from orthodontics, mainly because healthy and balanced teeth can be moved at almost any age.

It isn't strange to start orthodontic treatment solution if a single or more of the following early warning signs are noticed:

* Embarrassing teeth or smile often hidden by hands

Why Braces?

People whose bites are normal probably take eating for granted. But for the many adults and children who have bite and jaw problems, the simple act of eating can be an ordeal three times a day. Today, thanks to the art and science of orthodontics, eating and smiling can be a pleasure!

Orthodontics is the area of dentistry that diagnoses and treats dental and/or facial irregularities. These irregularities often result in malocclusions, a word that comes from Latin and means 'bad bite.' Malocclusion is the word orthodontists and dentists use to describe the shape of your mouth and problems with the way the teeth fit together.

More adults over the age of 30 lose their teeth because of periodontal problems than because of decay. Studies show that millions of Americans have oral health problems that could benefit from braces and other orthodontic treatment. Without treatment, many of these people could develop serious problems, including tooth decay, diseased gums, bone destruction, Temporomandibular Joint problems (commonly called TMJ), and loss of teeth.

Most bite problems are inherited and, therefore, can't be prevented. You may have inherited large teeth from your father and a small jaw from your mother, or vice versa. Acquired malocclusions can be caused by trauma, thumb-sucking, breathing through the mouth and pushing your tongue between your front teeth, which can make your teeth stick out too much, or early loss of baby teeth, which can cause adjacent teeth to move into the empty spaces. Regardless of how these problems occur, they can affect the alignment of your teeth and your facial balance as well.

Your orthodontist may recommend braces, surgery, or a combination of orthodontic interventions to return your teeth to their healthiest. Some of the most common reasons for braces include:

• Crowding - teeth are crooked, turned or overlapped

• Overjet - upper front teeth protrude beyond normal contact with the lower front teeth

• Deep Overbite - front lower incisor teeth bite too close or into the gum tissue behind the upper teeth

• Open Bite - upper and lower incisor teeth do not touch

• Spacing - too much space between teeth

• Crossbite - teeth fall inside or outside of the opposing set

• Open Bite - upper and lower teeth do not make contact with each other

• Gummy Smile - too much pink gum tissue showing when speaking or smiling

• Tongue Thrust - tongue slides between and behind the teeth when swallowing, pushing teeth apart and out

Orthodontic treatment can have a long-range effect on facial appearance and oral health. Regardless of the type of orthodontic problem and the treatment needed to correct it, remember that a better-looking bite works better, too!

Orthodontic Health Month Ends with a Halloween Treat

October marks National Orthodontic Health Month. As part of their commitment to oral health education in Manhattan Beach, Dr. Panucci and the Beach Braces Team are providing braces-friendly tips to patients and parents.

The haunting hours of Halloween can mean big trouble for trick-or-treaters who wear braces. Dr. Panucci reminds patients to follow special guidelines for keeping braces intact and keeping themselves safe.

WHAT TO AVOID AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
If it's sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy, it's a food that anyone wearing braces or retainers should avoid. Dr. Panucci urges patients to steer clear of the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:

All hard candies
All chewy candies
Caramel
Nuts
Licorice
Taffy
Jelly beans
Hard pretzels
Bubblegum
Popcorn (including unpopped kernels)
Taco chips/Corn chips
Ice

Of course, Halloween does not have to be completely treat-less. Braces-friendly Halloween treats can help orthodontic patients enjoy the "spook-ta-cular" holiday. For example, plain chocolate candy is okay, provided the orthodontic patient remembers to brush and floss afterwards. Bobbing for apples as well as caramel apples are not recommended for orthodontic patients. However, patients can enjoy thinly sliced apples, dipped in yogurt or creamy chocolate sauce.

Orthodontists suggest looking for foods that are soft, such as soft chocolate that can melt in one's mouth or peanut butter cups. Overall, candies that aren't sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy are generally acceptable.

We want patients to have fun while in orthodontic treatment. Cooperation is always key, and exercising caution at Halloween could keep patients on the right track to great results!

WHAT TO DO IF FOOD DAMAGES A PATIENT'S BRACES:
If an orthodontic patient chews the wrong type of treat and damage occurs, it is recommended that the patient calls his/her orthodontist so that arrangements can be made to correct the problem. Small problems can often be solved over the phone. Loose brackets or poking wires can often be held in place with orthodontic wax until the patient can come into the office.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT IS NECESSARY?
Be aware of early signs or habits that may indicate the need for an examination by an orthodontist. These signs or habits may include:

Early or late loss of baby teeth
Difficulty in chewing or biting
Mouth breathing
Thumb sucking
Finger sucking
Crowding, misplaced or blocked out teeth
Jaws that shift or make sounds
Biting the cheek
Lower front teeth biting into the roof of the mouth
Teeth that meet abnormally or not at all
Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face
A crossbite (one jaw does not fit properly with the opposing jaw due to differences in size)

Less Tin In a Grin (Advances in Braces)

Today, advances in materials and techniques for use in outer space and in computers are changing the way your orthodontist improves your smile. If you're considering braces and thinking of pictures of your parents, or even your grandparents, with smiles full of metal, think again. New options in orthodontic technology and technique are making braces less noticeable and more comfortable. In some cases, these advances also mean you'll achieve that new smile faster.

In the past, the most noticeable part of your braces was the stainless steel bands wrapped around and cemented to individual teeth. Today, you may need bands on only a couple of teeth. The majority of your teeth will have smaller, more comfortable brackets bonded directly to them with adhesive.

Another innovation is in the wires that are attached to the brackets. Called 'space age' because they were developed for use in the NASA space program, these wires are made of flexible metal. They're also called 'memory wire' because they return to a pre-formed shape, which is how they move your teeth. These new wires are easier to install, require fewer replacements and adjustments, and work faster.

If your orthodontic condition permits, there are nearly invisible orthodontic options. Brackets made of ceramics are tooth colored or clear. Lingual braces are applied to the inside of the teeth, so they're not visible at all. For adults and mature adolescents whose teeth require only minimal straightening, there are also clear aligners, which really aren't braces in the old-fashioned sense at all. A computer generates a set of clear aligners that are worn in succession to straighten your teeth.

Advancements aren't just in braces, either. Computer technology is rapidly changing and improving the way your treatment is planned. Your orthodontic records can now be done digitally, with digital X-rays and digital photographs that are saved directly to computer. There are computer programs that aid your orthodontist in diagnosis and in creation of a treatment plan. You may even be able to see an image of the way you're going to look with your new smile.

And the advances continue. Heat activated wires, bent into their memory position by robots using digital photos of your mouth, are already available. Your orthodontist doesn't have to adjust these wires as often, and you can tighten your own braces by drinking something hot. While these wires don't actually move your teeth faster, they may shorten treatment time by moving them along a shorter path. There is even a promising technology in development that will move your teeth using opposing magnets.

By the time you read this, there will be even newer technologies to help you achieve straighter teeth. The 'tin grin' of yesteryear may not be fashionable today, but a healthy, shiny, beautiful smile will never go out of fashion!
